"Interludes for Percussion & Trumpet" was composed for Percussionist Michael Englander and Trumpeter Burnette Dillon and premiered at the 1985 Percussive Arts Society national convention in Los Angeles. It features four contrasting movements:
The opening phrases of "March" have a fanfare-like quality while retaining an angular structure to the melody. The crisp snare drum passages and dramatic interval leaps in the trumpet set a tone of tension while retaining a sense of order. After a slower contrasting section featuring vibraphone and trumpet in mute, the movement reprises its dramatic opening and finishes with one last fanfare and a snare drum flourish.
"Elegy" has a wistful quality and uses chordal and orchestrational elements from the jazz lexicon. The vibraphone accompanies a plaintive flugelhorn on a melody which is both reflective and hopeful. The mixture of the elements paints an homage to a bygone era, and the movement ends with a wistful phrase, the sound of rushing air and a delicate wind chime blowing in the breeze of history.
"Prayer" combines the muted trumpet's lyricism with the vibraphone's consistent pulse and constantly evolving tonalities. It is both a hopeful statement of thanks for the present and a plea for a better future. The use of fourth and fifth structures colors both melody and chordal accompaniment. The broad tessitura of the trumpet adds an emotional sweep to the movement, which ends quietly in supplication.
Many tempo and timbre changes highlight "Finale" which is the most technically challenging portion of the work and draws motivic inspiration from the preceding three movements. The opening trumpet statement is the thematic genus that evolves throughout the movement. The trumpet goes quickly in and out of mute as the varied percussion instruments seamlessly change between one another. A rapid tempo increase lifts the work towards a stirring conclusion which features a slap-mallet ostinato, frantic tom-tom interjections and motivic recapitulation of both the movement and the entire work. Like the first movement, "Finale" ends with a fanfare and a flourish.
Written to be equally challenging to both percussionist and trumpeter, "Interludes" employs the use of multiple mallets, quick stick changes and multiple-instrument percussion set-ups, technical and lyrical challenges for both players, and stylistic and emotional contrasts to create a work that is satisfying to both performers and listeners alike. The duration is approximately 10 minutes.

BRASS TRIO
1) Fanfare - MP3 2) Elegy ![]()

"Brass Trio (1988)" was composed by Mark Wolfram and premiered at the 1989 International Horn Society convention in Munich, Germany where it received the Grand Prize in their annual composition contest. Scored for Bb Trumpet, French Horn and Tenor Trombone, the composition utilizies fourth and fifth structure tonalities and features three contrasting movements.
The first movement, "Fanfare," opens with strong ensemble figures based on a fourth-structure chord. Following the introduction a Trumpet presents the first theme - a fluid line with unexpected contours. The rhythmic under-pinnings from the French Horn and Trombone use 5/8 and 7/8 time signatures to add an unexpected lilt and freshness. The restatement of the first theme has a close, "jazz"-type harmonization. The Trombone and French Horn trade motifs in the next section, which then develops into a restatement of the opening ensemble figures, this time with more ornamentation, followed by a strong, jaunty conclusion.
The second movement, "Elegy," starts with a sensitive Trombone solo with Trumpet and Horn underpinnings. This melody is then repeated by the Trumpet. As the motifs from this simple melody evolve, the ensemble builds to a dramatic climax - and then quickly subsides to several thematic restatements of the climactic motif. Finally, the movement ends on a soft, simple open-fourth-structure chord.
The third movement, "Dance," is a bright, full-voiced, multi-metered romp. The contrasting middle section has the brass in straight mutes playing long melodic lines with pointed replies. The movement then reprises its opening, followed by a short, rousing coda.
The duration is approximately 6 minutes. "Brass Trio (1988)" has been performed worldwide and has been featured repeatedly on BBC Radio. It's a real audience pleaser!

FREE FLIGHT
for Flute & Piano
MP3
"Free Flight" was composed by Marilyn Harris in the rondo form and features the flute and piano in a "jazzy" style.
After a short, rubato opening by the flute and piano, the tempo increases as the piano repeats a syncopated rhythmic motif which is the underpinning for the rest of the piece. The flute enters playing a melody (the "A" section) with exciting jazz rhythms and interesting intervalic jumps. This is followed by a contrasting "B" section, a repeat of the "A" section followed by a solo piano "C" section. After returning to the "A" section, a "D" section is followed by a variation of the "A" section. After an exciting romp through the many twists of this rondo form, it quickly comes to a relaxed and satisfying conclusion.
"Free Flight" is a GRADE 4 flute solo and highlights the performer's mastery of syncopated rhythms, varied articulations, large intervalic jumps and contrasting dynamics. The duration is approximately 4 minutes.
A solo flute part and piano score is included. Available only through this website from Sound Studio Publications.

Lamentation & Dance
for Solo 'Cello & Pianoforte
1) Lamentation - MP3 2) Dance ![]()
- MP3 3) Ending ![]()
- MP3
"Lamentation & Dance" was composed by Mark Wolfram in April of 1998 for the confirmation of his godson, Paul, a student 'cellist.
Following a short piano introduction, the 'cello enters with the plantive "Lamentation" melody which is offset by carillon-type chords in the piano. After a repeat of the melody and a short cadence, a bouncy, waltz-type "Dance" section with melodic ornamentation and unexpected tonalities plays twice on its way to a reprise of the "Lamentation" section. The piece is capped off with an introspective and melancholy coda. As the 'cello sustains its final tone a final carillon statement is delivered by the piano.
"Lamentation & Dance" makes a wonderful student recital piece, with its satisfying structural elements and unexpected harmonic twists. The duration is approximately 4 minutes.
A solo 'cello part and piano score is included. Available only through this website from Sound Studio Publications.

PIVOT POINTS
for French Horn & Piano
MP3
"Pivot Points" was composed by Marilyn Harris in October of 1986.
With its sweeping open-horn melodies, plaintive muted lines and pulsating piano underpinning, "Pivot Points" is an extremely enjoyable romp for the horn player, pianist and listener alike!!! After an introductory section marked by hand-stopped horn lines played over a sequence of repeating piano tonalities, the rhythmic pulse kicks in and never stops as the horn player negotiates broad sweeping lines, jazz falls, and intricate rhythms and intervals. Interesting piano interludes provide plenty for the pianist to do besides keep the pulse. An optional 8va passage at the end provides an opportunity for the horn player to "bring the house down!!!"
"Pivot Points" is a great study in tone, range, style and technique and would make a wonderful recital "encore" selection, as the excitement builds all the way to the end! The duration is approximately 5 minutes.
A solo french horn part and piano score is included. Available only through this website from Sound Studio Publications.
